Chinese New Year. Year of the MonkeyChinese New Year –  Lunar New Year begins on Monday, February 8th. This will be the year of the Fire Monkey.  The year name is a combination of 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches creating a sequence of year names that repeat every 60 years. –  6.NS.4, 7.SP.8, S-CP

Students explore the least common multiple of two cycles without ever hearing the term LCM.  They become a little more aware of Chinese culture and the major significance of this annual event, while they “do the math”.

MardiGras-masksMardi gras – Tuesday, February 9, 2016, will be the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of the season of Lent.  Mardi Gras is the last hoorah and is celebrated throughout the world with feasting, partying, and general indulgence.  In New Orleans revelers throw and collect purple, green, and gold beads.
